With more than 200 drivers waving “No more cabs!” signs on red, white and blue paper, the Nevada Taxicab Authority on Monday rejected several companies’ requests for temporary permits to cover a major event — the second such rejection in recent weeks.
The plan to purchase the Mob Experience at the Tropicana Las Vegas out of bankruptcy received court approval Monday, but litigation will likely continue on several fronts.
October wasn’t that great for Las Vegas tourism. Although the monthly Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority visitor count marks the 20th consecutive gain in prior-year comparisons, it wasn’t by much.
While Las Vegas tourism numbers rose 5.5 percent in September over the same month in 2010, convention attendance soared with a 49.1 percent increase over the same period. In all, 3.29 million tourists visited Las Vegas in September, but 434,373 attended conventions.
For cab driver Mamerto Mercado Jr., October fell into a rhythm that has been all too rare during Las Vegas’ economic struggles.
The showgirls will get a few months off, but they’ll need to stay in shape.
Tourists descended on Las Vegas in greater numbers as the total visitor count in April rose 4.8 percent from one year ago to 3.35 million.
