Las Vegas police seek help in year-old slaying outside bank

One year after a man was robbed and slain outside of a bank, Las Vegas police asked the public's help to find new leads in the cold case.

Amanpreet Singh was killed in broad daylight on March 30, 2011, outside a Wells Fargo bank near Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue.

Police said Singh, who owned a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store, was about to make a money deposit about 4:30 p.m. when a white Dodge Stratus with two men inside approached.

The passenger of the Stratus shot Singh and took his bank bag, police said.

"Not a word was said to him," Homicide Lt. Ray Steiber said at a Thursday news conference.

Police initially thought Singh had been targeted but now think he was chosen at random.

The bank was targeted by the suspects, but Singh was simply an unlucky victim in the wrong place at the wrong time, Steiber said.

"This was just an ordinary guy living the American dream and trying to make a living for his family," he said.

Surveillance video captured part of the shooting. A video clip released by police showed Singh falling to the ground and a man taking a bank bag from his body before fleeing.

The Stratus was found abandoned about a mile from the crime scene. It was previously thought that the suspects may have then fled in a silver Ford F-150 truck, but Steiber said there have been conflicting reports.

Detectives are unsure what the suspects did after abandoning the Stratus, he said.

Steiber said detectives have interviewed more than 50 people and reviewed more than 100 tips but still aren't sure the race of the suspects.

The men could be white, Hispanic or of mixed descent, he said.

"It could be anybody," Steiber said. "We just don't know."

A $20,000 reward has been offered for information in the killing.
