LV police identify car chase suspect

A man who fired at Las Vegas police during a brief car chase in the northeast valley Tuesday afternoon was identified Wednesday as 24-year-old David Torres.

Torres is an admitted gang member who had just been released from prison, according to his arrest report. The report said Torres' criminal history included battery with bodily harm and burglary offenses, which occurred in 2007 in North Las Vegas.

According to the report, an officer saw Torres speed through a red light at 2:43 p.m. at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue. An officer started pursuit but ended it because of high speed. Torres, in a Dodge Caravan, was driving 80 mph, the report said. A second officer began pursuit. The report said the suspect fired at least one shot and struck the front of a patrol car. Police arrested Torres near Nellis and Cartier Avenue.

Torres is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center on several recommended charges .
