Man tells police he tried to kill himself multiple times after killing girlfriend

The man who drowned his girlfriend after an altercation Friday night tried to take his own life several times after the incident, police said.

Neal Huff, 51, said he and his girlfriend Karen Hevener, 56, had been arguing at their house at 5879 Sleepy Spruce St. near Durango Drive and Russell Road. He told police the fight escalated in the backyard and Huff drowned Hevener in their pool, according to his arrest report.

Huff said he tried to revive Hevener after she stopped moving but was unsuccessful. Feeling bad about what he had done, Huff tried several times to take his own life but failed, according to the report.

Huff said he tried to hang himself with the rope that was still around his neck when police found him, but the rope broke.

He was arrested and faces one count of murder.
