Police: Nye County woman shoots puppy who killed ducklings

A Pahrump woman is facing criminal charges after police say she wreaked bloody vengeance on a neighbor's puppy Sunday night.

Maria Furtado, 40, will be charged with animal cruelty, two counts of child abuse and neglect and petit larceny, the Nye County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday night.

Investigators said a neighbor's puppy killed Furtado's two ducklings several days before the incident. Police allege that Furtado went into her neighbor's yard, took the puppy and drove into the desert with her 15-year-old son and a 3-year-old child.

The woman shot the puppy multiple times with a pistol. Police said she also made the teenager shoot the puppy.

Furtado was booked into the Nye County Detention Center.
