Mother arrested in death of newborn who drowned in bathtub

A woman is facing a murder charge Wednesday after police said she gave birth to a baby girl who was left in a bathtub and later drowned.

Officers responded just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to an apartment in the 2800 block of South Maryland Parkway after receiving a report of a newborn who died in a bathtub, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

“The investigation initiated by the LVMPD Abuse and Neglect Section indicated the mother of the newborn, later identified as 20 year old Veronica Salazar, had given birth to the child while inside the apartment,” Metro said in a news release Wednesday.

Salazar, who had concealed the birth, requested medical treatment, police said. She was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where it was determined she had given birth recently and needed surgery.

Salazar, who was still at the hospital Wednesday, was arrested and booked in absentia into the Clark County Detention Center, police said.

The Clark County coroner confirmed “Baby Girl Salazar” died at 4 a.m. Wednesday. The coroner has not determined the cause and manner of her death.

This is the 92nd homicide investigated by Metro in their jurisdiction for 2016.
