Man suspected of shooting at Las Vegas officers last week arrested

Las Vegas police arrested a 41-year-old man Wednesday accused of shooting at a pair of officers last week during a vehicle stop.

On May 18 about 9:30 p.m., Metropolitan Police Department detectives in an unmarked patrol car pulled over a man who was driving a dark BMW erratically in the area of Rancho Drive and Sahara Avenue.

As the detectives walked up to the BMW driver at 2950 W. Sahara Ave., near the Palace Station, the driver fired a round through the back windshield at the detectives; they were not hurt, and they did not return fire.

The man then took off in the BMW, prompting a valleywide search for the shooter. A week later, Jason Simpson was taken into custody in connection with the incident.

He is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center and faces several charges: discharging a gun in a prohibited area, disobeying a peace officer, resisting a police officer with a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance and three counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. He was also charged with possessing a gun as a prohibited person.

Simpson has previously been arrested for domestic violence battery, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a controlled substance, court records show.

He is due in court June 8.
