Neon Museum Boneyard comes alive

Las Vegas' storied past lights up downtown's newest cultural attraction Saturday, when the Neon Museum opens to the public.

The museum showcases more than a hundred signs in its outdoor Neon Boneyard. But there's more to the museum than glittering remnants of legendary Las Vegas casinos. A visitors center housed in the concrete clamshell that once served as the La Concha Motel lobby features interactive previews of the signs today - and photos of them glowing in their prime.

Check out Friday's Neon section for a sneak preview of the new museum, highlighting the boneyard's star attractions, from the Stardust and Sahara marquees to Treasure Island's exiled pirate skull and the Tam O'Shanter Motel's trademark headgear. Museum officials also recall the crusade to save the signs from oblivion - and remember, with a sigh, the ones that got away.
