Dining Pick of the Week: Rachel’s Kitchen

Rachel’s Kitchen is a local franchise with humble beginnings. The culinary brainchild of Debbie Sofer Roxarzade, it is named for her daughter Rachel and started with the first location in Summerlin in 2006. Since then, Rachel’s Kitchen has grown to seven Las Vegas Valley restaurants, including the Centennial Hills location.

Dining Pick of the Week: Volcano Grille

Volcano Grille recently moved to a home with more space in the dining room and the kitchen. With a background in traditional teppanyaki, knives and spatulas are flying, so the chefs can use all the space they can get.

Dining Pick of the Week: Hash House a Go Go

Known for its over-the-top “twisted farm food,” Hash Hash a Go Go started offering its brunch menu 24/7 at its newest Henderson location, which took over the former Tony Roma’s Feb. 23.

Downtown redevelopment backs 3 new restaurants

Tony Hsieh’s downtown redevelopment initiative is adding a trio of new distinct restaurant concepts in a single building in the heart of a burgeoning foodie row along the Carson Avenue corridor near Downtown Project’s signature Container Park on East Fremont.

Welcome to Wonderland: Bakery brings whimsy to Downtown Summerlin

Step into Downtown Summerlin’s Wonderland Bakery, and you leave the real world behind. The floor sparkles with embedded fairy dust. A miniature train travels a looping track above. On the shelves are shining crowns for little princesses and wands for bestowing wishes.

Wine of the Week: Chloe Pinot Noir

Chloe Pinot Noir needs to open a good hour-plus before consumption to let off some of the detectable volatile acidity, but then it softens up and becomes quite classic. It is superbly priced and a great value.

You can still eat at Simon until May 22

A lot of people seemed quite upset to read in my Saturday column that Simon at Palms Place is shutting down, while chef Kerry Simon battles a physically debilitating disease.

Dining Pick of the Week: Rumbi Island Grill

On the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Maryland Parkway, nestled next to the hub of UNLV, is Rumbi Island Grill. The eatery evokes a tropical food paradise with a vibrantly painted mural of Hawaii lining the back wall, and brightly colored orchids acting as the centerpiece for the dining room’s wooden tables.

Dining Pick of the Week: Poke Express

One might not expect to find fresh seafood poke 2,684 miles from Hawaii, especially in in the Las Vegas desert, but at Poke Express, the Big Island is packed inside a market.

Dining Pick of the Week: Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt

Las Vegans are discovering the hard-to-beat flavors at Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt. The walk-up stand features hand mixed ice cream, just as it was back in 1945 when Alice Handel began serving ice cream out of her husband’s gas station in Youngstown, Ohio.

Wine of the Week: Epicuro Nero D’Avola

Sicily has been producing wine for thousands of years and some of the oldest native grape varieties are found here. For a wine at less than $6, Epicuro Nero D’Avola has staggering fruit.

Dining Pick of the Week: 8 Noodle Bar

Red Rock Resort’s 8 Noodle Bar takes its name from tradition: A dragon takes the shape of the number eight and is considered lucky in many Asian cultures.
