Musical Arts Society to perform ‘Messiah’
The 70-voice Musical Arts Chorus will sing G.F. Handel's "Messiah" at 3 p.m. Sunday in Artemus Ham Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.
The 24-piece Musical Arts Orchestra will accompany the singers during the Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society concert, the third of the group's 47th season.
Tickets, priced at $15 general admission; $10 for seniors, the military and the disabled; and $5 for students, are available at the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office, 895-2787.
The concert will feature "Messiah" Part II, "The Passion," and Part III, "The Redemption and Resurrection."
Handel completed the original version of "Messiah" in just 24 days in 1741 when his friend Charles Jennens sent him a libretto composed from both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Handel was so impressed with the text that he immediately set to work on creating the orotorio. The piece was first performed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1742.
