Children’s series offers undersea adventure, music, marionettes

Las Vegas will bring three nationally acclaimed productions to the Charleston Heights Arts Center and the downtown Historic Fifth Street School this summer, all targeted at broadening family cultural education and entertainment: “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band and “The Dragon King.”

Each performance is at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are priced at $3 per person for each show; discounted pricing is available for groups of 20 or more. Charleston Heights Arts Center is at 800 S. Two enthusiastic Jules Verne fans tell the story of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” in this adaptation by Tears of Joy Theatre of the classic book by Verne. The steampunk puppet production combines humor with science and the technology imagined by Verne to inspire the desire to learn and explore. Performances are July 17 at Charleston Heights and July 18 at the Historic Fifth Street School.

Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band are familiar to “kindie rock” fans, with No. 1 hits on Sirius XM’s Kids Place Live. This family band has won awards and acclaim from People magazine, USA Today, Zooglobble, Parent’s Choice (Gold Award), NAPPA and Cool Mom Picks . Performances are July 24 at Charleston Heights and July 25 at the Historic Fifth Street School.

Tanglewood Marionettes will present “The Dragon King” July 31 at Charleston Heights Arts Center and Aug. 1 at the Historic Fifth Street School. An underwater fantasy based on Chinese folklore, “The Dragon King” tells the tale of a wise grandmother who journeys to the bottom of the sea to seek the king and the answer to why he has forsaken the land above. The production is a heart-warming tale that will enthrall young and old alike.
