'War Horse'

Director Steven Spielberg's pictorially stirring "War Horse" -- which follows its equine protagonist from the pastoral English countryside to the horrors of World War I trench warfare -- deliberately recalls the old-fashioned, larger-than-life epics of such filmmaking giants as John Ford and David Lean.
