Summerlin adds three new schools to community

Summerlin, now 26 years into its development, has delivered on its promise of quality of life for more than a quarter century via expertly designed neighborhoods, stunning homes, more than 150 parks, its own 106-acre downtown shopping, dining and entertainment destination and 23 top-rated public and private schools. Now the community is adding two more public schools and a public charter school to its roster of educational offerings. The new schools will bring the number of public and private schools in Summerlin to 26.

“As Summerlin continues to unfold, The Howard Hughes Corp. continues to add critical and important amenities such as schools to support our growing population,” said Julie Cleaver, vice president of Summerlin. “Land for sale to public schools is always incorporated into the master plan, and as is standard in our community, we also try to connect our neighborhoods to schools with our award-winning Summerlin trail system. Our goal is to offer safe passage to and from school for students and their parents while encouraging outdoor activity.”

The two new Clark County School District public elementary schools are set to open for the 2017-18 school year. One school, offering kindergarten through fifth grade, is in Summerlin’s new Cliffs village, and is near Maule Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive. The campus will include three buildings with a central courtyard and turf playground. Seating up to 850 students, the school will offer music, arts and literacy classes.

The second new Clark County Elementary School is in The Paseos village along Antelope Ridge Drive. Also designed to seat 850 students, this campus includes two classroom buildings, an administration building and a large multipurpose building. Starting with prekindergarten programs, this school offers a dedicated early childhood education classroom, special education classrooms and literacy classrooms. The curriculum includes music, art and Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) programming.

According to the Clark County School District, these two new schools will offer comprehensive elementary school education on a traditional school year calendar and, they will help alleviate overcrowding at nearby schools in our community. At the start of the 2017 school year, CCSD expects the student population to increase by 2,000 to 3,000 students valleywide. These two new schools in Summerlin represent two of eight new CCSD school buildings opening at the start of the 2017-18 school year and will help bring nearby schools closer to their intended populations and allow for the removal of portable classrooms at those existing campuses.

Also opening in Summerlin, Doral Academy Red Rock is a state-sponsored public charter school. Located near the southwest corner of Sky Vista Drive and Alta Drive near West Charleston Boulevard, this school is slated to open for the 2016-17 school year. Doral Academy Red Rock will encompass grades K-9 and will eventually expand to include 10th, 11th and 12th grades as its student population matriculates. Overseen by the State Public Charter School Authority, the school is free to attend and students are accepted through a lottery system. The campus is expected to accommodate 2,400 students at full capacity.
