Vegas sixth fastest growing city

Las Vegas was the sixth-fastest growing city between 2000 and 2013, increasing by 23.6 percent, according to data from National Historic Geographic Information Society and the Census Bureau and analyzed by Mooseroots.

Topping the list was Raleigh, N.C., which grew 50.1 percent, followed by Bakersfield, Calif., at 42.8 percent; Fort Worth, Texas at 42.3 percent, Charlotte, N.C., at 40 percent and Austin, Texas, at 27.5 percent.

The Las Vegas Valley, of course, is much more than the city of Las Vegas. While the story on the report doesn't break down our area growth, a cool heat map shows that Clark County expanded 43.7 percent during that time.

Heritage By Lennar community center breaks ground

Work has begun on a 28,000-square-foot Heritage By Lennar community center in the Cadence new-home community in Henderson.

When it's done, it will offer a fitness center, ballroom, cafe and lap pool indoors, with a bigger pool, patio and picnic area outside. There also will be tennis courts, bocce ball and a barbecue area.

Six new models for 16 production homes are expected to open at Cadence in mid-December.

Nevada has one of the windiest cities

It gets gusty in Las Vegas in the winter, but Sin City doesn't begin to threaten Chicago's hold on the Windy City title.

Reno is another story.

Date by CoreLogic shows that Jackson, Miss., is the windiest city in the country (Chicago's 50th in the top 10). but that Reno checked in with the highest wind speed at 126 mph — higher even than Carson City when the Legislature is in session.
