11 Las Vegas-based clubs you might want to join

Perhaps you just moved to Las Vegas, perhaps you want to be more involved in the community or perhaps you just simply want new friends. Passionate about knitting? There’s a club for that. Love guns more than anything? There are clubs for that, too. There are many, many clubs in town, so we selected a few that may be of interest to you.
Derived from a list posted on reddit’s Las Vegas section, these clubs are all active and have open memberships.
Las Vegas Astronomical Society
Ever find yourself staring at the sky and wondering, “how and why?” A group of amateur astronomers gathered to form the non-profit Astronomical Society in 1980. Their main goal is to promote and develop interest in astronomy. The group mainly operates out of the College of Southern Nevada Planetarium and has regular meetings in town and field trips out of town.
The group encourages that interested parties go to at least one meeting before becoming a member. The group’s next meeting is June 5 at the CSN Planetarium at 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.
Regular membership: $36

Around the Bend Friends Hiking Club
This hiking club is made up of over-50 members with “very young hearts” that hike easy to moderate rated hikes around Las Vegas. Members of the group host hikes throughout the week, with themes such as “Tough Tuesdays,” where they tackle tougher hikes in the Spring Mountains.
The group welcomes people to casually join a hike or two at their leisure.
Regular membership: $5
If you want some outdoor excercise, and might be a bit younger, the Valley Striders is for you. Started in 2007, the Striders were a group of marathon runners that formed a club based on a love of running, jogging and walking outdoors.
The group runs the Palo Verde High School track, the hill run through Del Webb at Rampart and other areas around Summerlin at least three times per week.

What might possibly be one of Las Vegas’ oldest clubs, the LVRAC was founded in 1961. The group holds meetings throughout the month at Denny’s and Nellis Air Force Base. Jerry Sobel, president of the club, has had a passion for “ham” radio his entire life.
If you know what, “GMRS Emergency Net 19:15 on GMRS-7, ARES/RACES Net 19:30” means, that’s the event every Monday and this club is probably for you.

If you love flying RC planes, this is your club. Welcome to all ages, the group focuses on the art of soaring — flying and building RC airplanes and helicopters. The club meets at the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop on Saturdays.

Sin City Hookers Crochet & Knitting Group
Calling all yarn addicts! Boasting 400 members, Sin City Hookers meets every month at Sin City Knit Shop at 2185 E. Windmill Suite #500. The group’s website says, “knitting is good on an individual level, by keeping traditions alive and connecting women with their pasts, giving them a feminist perspective on craft and the homemade, allowing for individual expression.”
The next meeting is June 4.

Henderson Writer’s Group is a group of 100-or so members that help aspiring writer’s hone in their craft and help them get published. The group meets each week on Mondays with times and locations available on their calandar.
The group hosts the Las Vegas Writer’s Conference which draws in publishers and writers from across the country.
Regular membership: $40
Another older group on the list, the archaeology group formed in 1966. The groups says their goals are to “preserve Nevada’s antiquities, encourage the study of archaeology, and to educate the public on the aims of archaeological research.”
During the school year, the group attends the UNLV Department of Antropolgy lecture series, and has a meting on the second Thursday each month September through May.

Desert Sportsman Rifle & Pistols Club
For some of our more rugged readers, this club surrounds the love of guns and shooting. The club has events every weekend at different ranges around town, viewable on their online calandar.
The group is an affiliate of the NRA and DSRPC members are required to be NRA members.

It’s safe to say there are a lot of cyclists in Las Vegas. Why ride alone? The Las Vegas Bike Club is a group founded in 1989 by people who loved to ride. Since then, the group has expanded to over 100 members, with business sponsorship. They ride most bicycle events and have a slew of their own.
The group has an activity nearly every day of the week for bike enthusiasts.
Membership varies for individuals, families and seniors.
The NCC is for people who love photoraphy. They welcome photographers of all skill sets and levels of experience to come shoot, get tips, learn and teach about photography.
The group hosts meetings with all areas of focus throughout the month, including an upcoming meeting “Photoshop for Beginners.”
Membership fees vary based on month registered and age of the indicidual.
