Nevada included among 3 states under recall of raw frozen scallops

Nevada is one of three states affected by a recall of raw frozen scallops after an outbreak of Hepatitis A in Hawaii, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Sea Port Products Corporation recalled three lots of frozen Bay Scallops dated November 23-24, 2015, after FDA lab analysis confirmed Hepatitis A virus in scallop samples provided by the company.

No Hepatitis A cases linked to the scallops have been confirmed in Southern Nevada, and Southern Nevada Health District environmental health employees are working with restaurant owners to ensure they’re aware of the outbreak, district spokeswoman Stephanie Bethel said.

The scallops were sent to California, Hawaii and Nevada and should not have been sold through retail stores, according to the FDA.

More than 200 cases of Hepatitis A have been reported in Hawaii in connection with the outbreak. All confirmed victims have been adults, and more than 50 cases have required hospitalization.

Within 15 to 50 days of exposure to Hepatitis A virus, an infected person may suffer from symptoms including fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice and pale stool. The contagious liver disease may last weeks to months.
