Home-grown fruit available at master gardener orchard

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Orchard in North Las Vegas offers home-grown fruit for purchase. The orchard is only open to the public on volunteer days: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. to noon.

Beginning in May, apricots will be ripe.

Also available is fruit wood for smoking and grilling, priced at $1 per pound, and bee boxes; a $5 donation per box is asked.

Additionally, back by popular demand, is the community mulch pile. This is coarse, organic wood mulch chipped from trees removed in the Las Vegas community. Because it is coarse, the mulch will not blow under high winds. It also allows good water and air penetration to the roots. It will decompose in a couple of years adding organic matter to your soil, helping lower the pH and encouraging soil microorganisms and worms.

Rather than sending the valuable resource to the landfill, it is offered free to the public. The pile is located within the orchard; just stop by during operating hours.

It is possible to arrange a delivery of mulch greater than 10 cubic yards. Call 257-5555 or e-mail morrisr@unce.unr.edu for details.

To visit the orchard, located at 4400 Horse Drive, North Las Vegas, take U.S. 95 north or Interstate 15 north to the Las Vegas Beltway. Head east toward Aliante and exit on Aliante Parkway. Travel north to Horse Drive and turn left.

Sunset Garden Club to hold annual flower show May 1

Sunset Garden Club will finish its season with its 18th annual flower show May 1. The theme for this year's event is "A Glimpse of the Past."

In addition to floral designs, the show will include horticultural and educational exhibits. Two exhibits will focus on the mechanics of floral designs and the cycle of plant growth and reproduction.

Also, a local Girl Scout troop will display native plants of Southern Nevada.

The show will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, Henderson.

It is free and open to the public.

Fig trees need ample water while producing fruit

We are quickly approaching temperatures (and wind) that require watering figs three times a week. The higher temperatures demand more water for production to continue.

What can be done to help ailing gardenia?

Gardenias have similar needs as roses. Their health and growth respond best to wood chip mulch decomposing on the soil surface.

Some petunia varieties can stand up to our summer heat

There are lots of different kinds of petunias. For instance, the Madness Summer Series can take the heat, but petunias typically are not known for that.
