Small pieces of baseboard will help negotiate rounded corners

Q: I am going to install some new baseboards in our house. My problem is that the corners of our walls are not at 90-degree angles. They are rounded bullnose corners, and the baseboard manufacturer does not make rounded pieces for this type of corner. I certainly can’t bend the baseboard around the corner, so how can I make the turn?

Ornamental pear, flowering plum in full bloom

Q: My husband and I just moved to Summerlin, and I am seeing pink and white blooms on trees in this area. Do you know what kind of trees these are?

Valentine’s Day: Gifts for the home

Why stick to the usual Valentine’s Day fare of flowers and heart-shaped boxes of candy when you can give a gift that will be treasured all year long? Buying a gift for the home can represent your love for someone special — or to yourself — in a much more fabulous and forever way.

Peach tree with yellow leaves needs more water

Q: I have a new Early Grande peach which produced more than 80 blossoms. I removed 50 of the fruit when they were small and harvested the rest when the fruit ripened. Now the leaves are turning yellow and dropping off. I am watering the tree for 40 minutes, three times a week so the tree is getting 16 gallons a week.

Console: Hardest working table in design world

Only last week I was accompanying a client on a walk-through of her new custom home that was in the final stages of being dry-walled. That’s always an exciting time for both homeowner and designer because many of the fundamental elements in the building and design process finally seem to materialize for the first time and suddenly the home is “there.” It’s real, three-dimensional and the room proportions are what they are — for better or for worse.

Understanding the future of Nevada’s electrical grid

Unless you are an electrician, understanding the electrical grid can feel like a topic better left to the experts. However, our dependence on reliable electricity at the touch of a switch, especially in triple-digit weather, is undeniable.

Culinary herbs are easy to cultivate in Southern Nevada

Everyone uses parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. In fact, these herbs are so popular that Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sang about them in their 1968 hit, “Scarborough Fair.”

Plant winter squash in June, July to harvest in fall

Q: I planted acorn and butternut squash last winter from seed and they didn’t grow. Now they are growing. The acorn squash is doing really well. I thought winter squash would ripen in the winter. Will these be edible?

Boom or doom: 10 years of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’

I often get frustrated writing this Green Living column as I try to walk the fine line between optimistically suggesting changes to lower our carbon footprints and proclaiming that “We are doomed.”
