Installing mesh will keep dog from squeezing through gate

Q: We recently got a small dog, and he likes to play in the backyard. The problem is that he is able to squeeze through the bars of the wrought-iron gate on the side of the house. Some of the neighbors have installed mesh across their gates to prevent their dogs from escaping. How can I go about this project?

Ceiling fans can help cool rooms during summer

DEAR Gail: We recently moved here from North Dakota, so we are new to the Las Vegas summer weather. I know that for most people it’s still considered cool, but for us, it’s already pretty warm. The home we purchased doesn’t have ceiling fans, so we’d like to get some installed before the true heat of the summer gets here. Could you share some things we need to consider before buying? — Marjorie

As Seen on TV items popular in retail outlets

An awards show Sept. 15 at Wynn Las Vegas recognized the best in television, radio, online and mobile direct response marketing. Think Pocket Hose, My Pillow, Ninja Coffee Bar, Oxy Clean, Ped Egg Foot File, Battle Balloons, Polar Pooch Self Cooling Mat and Jillian Michaels Nordic Track.

Avoid fridge problems with regular maintenance

Q: My refrigerator wasn’t getting cold enough, so I called in a repairman. He said the fan was blocked, pulled out a bunch of debris and cleaned it out. He commented that most problems with refrigerators could be avoided with simple maintenance. With that, he socked me with a $150 repair bill and I’m irate. What other maintenance could I have done?

Tree recycle centers open through Friday

Christmas trees are one of the most recognized traditions of the holiday season. But what happens after the holiday season?

Old Becomes New

A table is just a table to some, but to others it is a symbol of the future health of the planet and humans in general. From the woven rug on the cement slab to the stylish Adirondack chair on the patio, going green outside is easier than ever as consumers push for more environmentally friendly outdoor furniture.

FALL OUT

Homes in the northern U.S. are treated to a measure of effortless outdoor decorating for fall: Nature does most of the work by turning the trees a vivid palette of reds, oranges and golds. Add a pumpkin or two on the doorstep and the look is complete.

Ripe pomegranate seeds aren’t always red

Q: This is my first year growing pomegranates. I harvested three. The first two I picked too early because the skin broke and I didn’t want something to go after them. I expected them to be red inside. They weren’t. They were an off-white color but they do taste good and sweet. Did I pick them too green?

Cozy interior design warms home in cool season

Just as wardrobes change with the season, so should a home’s style. Spring and summer are for “whimsical” decor, says Wesley Thompson, an Annapolis, Md., interior designer, whereas there’s something about the fall and winter months that’s “more sophisticated and rich-feeling, as a reflection of the hibernating, nesting instinct.”

Turn a boring bedroom into a comfy retreat

We spend about 10 hours a day on average in the bedroom. That’s a good part of the day, so why not make this retreat one of the best rooms in the house?
