HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: On Wednesday, take a moderate 3-mile hike at Fossil Ridge to view the night sky; for ages 12 and older. Also on Wednesday, take an easy 2-mile hike around the boardwalk and Red Spring to listen to morning birds. On Saturday, take an easy to moderate 3-mile hike in Calico Basin to view rock formations, springs, plants and animals.
Mount Charleston: On Friday, hike the 6-mile Bristlecone Loop through a picturesque forest of white fir, aspen and ancient bristlecone pine trees; hikers will gain approximately 750 feet of elevation during this activity for ages 15 and older.
Around The Bend Friends: This group of people older than 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hikes, call 228-0773 or visit the club's website, www.aroundthebendfriends.com.
OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, stop by the visitors center to begin a scavenger hunt in the Discovery Plaza exhibit area. On Wednesday and Thursday, view table exhibits on Red Rock as part of the Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights picnic. Participants should bring their lunches, and the park will provide ice cream for dessert. On Friday, help clean up the canyon. On Saturday, a program will be offered exploring animal movements and rhythms; for ages 2 to 10. On Sunday, visitors will be introduced to some of the reptiles and arachnids indigenous to Red Rock through a tabletop presentation.
