The Water Cooler

Here are a few of the things in news, pop culture, entertainment and sports that we've been talking about lately:

• The Beijing Summer Olympics opening ceremony includes a torch-lighter who runs sideways along the top of the stadium. Not bad, although Wile E. Coyote perfected that trick a long time ago.

• Former presidential candidate John Edwards admits to an affair with a former campaign aide. If you think that $400 haircut was for his wife, you know absolutely nothing about men.

• "Star Trek: The Experience" at the Las Vegas Hilton hosts its final Trek convention before closing next month. It's unlikely that its replacement, "According to Jim: The Happening," will be quite as popular.

• Announced at that "Star Trek" convention is a multiplayer online game that allows players to create characters using pre-existing "Trek" species. Least popular player identity: Red Shirt No. 3.

• Numbers-minded lovebirds flock to area wedding chapels for 8/8/08 weddings: Nice people, but not nearly as fun as the ones who came for 6/6/06.
