ADELSON SCHOOL ADDS NEW STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND CLASSES

The Dr. Miriam & Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Campus, 9700 W. Hillpointe Road, added six new classes and 11 teachers this school year. Classes include junior kindergarten, kindergarten, second, fourth and eighth grades and an English as a Second Language program.

The school is also host to nine foreign exchange students from China, Israel and France. Adelson serves students from 18 months through 12th grade and offers Jewish educational programs.

LAS VEGAS ACADEMY TO HOST PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE FAIR

Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St., is scheduled to host the Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24. The event is free and open to the public.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling is sponsoring the event to allow college-bound students to meet with admission representatives from colleges, universities, studios, festivals and other educational institutions with visual and performing arts programs. Students will learn about admission and financial aid, portfolio days, auditions, student life and more.

GOODFELLAS BAR & RESTAURANT PLANS BENEFIT FOR PROJECT 150

Goodfellas Bar & Restaurant, 2801 N. Tenaya Way, plans to host The Breakfast Club at 7 p.m. Sept. 22 to benefit Project 150, a local nonprofit group that helps homeless and displaced students at 17 area high schools.

The event is free and will include a live band, a raffle and a silent auction.

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TEACHERS

The University of Phoenix is offering scholarships for teachers and administrators to achieve higher education. Fifty $500 scholarships will be given and can be applied to a single continuing education course.

SCHOOL DISTRICT SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR RECLAIM YOUR FUTURE VISITS

The Clark County School District is seeking volunteers for its Reclaim Your Future initiative scheduled for Sept. 22. School district officials and community volunteers will go door-to-door encouraging senior dropouts to return to high school.

In September 2011, volunteers visited more than 300 homes and got 22 students from eight high schools to return. In January, 49 students returned to school. This year, the district plans to seek out students from 16 high schools across the valley.

RANCHO HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST EVENT FOR KIDS WITH DISABILITIES

Rancho High School, 1900 Searles Ave., plans to host the Paralympic Sport Activity Night for students with disabilities from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 19. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to attend the free program, which will allow them an opportunity to compete in sports.

HIKES PLANNED FOR HOME-SCHOOLERS

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department plans to host a series of educational hikes for home-schooled students this fall. The hikes are open to children 5 to 10 accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The first in the series will cover trail bicycling and hiking etiquette and is scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Equestrian Park South, 1200 Equestrian Drive. Participants are asked to bring a bike or a scooter and a helmet.

Registration is required at cityofhenderson.com/parks or at any Henderson recreation center.

Other hikes are scheduled for Oct. 18 and Nov. 8.

PASEO VERDE LIBRARY SEEKS STUDENTS FOR ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, is seeking student members for its Middle School Advisory Council. An informational meeting for interested students is scheduled at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The MSAC helps the library design children's programs and suggests authors or series for the library to purchase.

NEVADA state cOLLEGE SEEKS NAME for scorpion mascot

As part of its 10th anniversary celebration, Nevada State College is hosting a naming contest for its scorpion mascot. Students, alumni, faculty and staff members can submit their suggested names online at nsc.edu/namethescorpion. Submissions are due Thursday.

A campus committee of faculty, staff members and students will select the final name based on popularity, creativity and how well it reflects the spirit of the college. The winning name will be announced Friday at the end of NSC's inaugural Spirit Week.

SPREAD THE WORD NEVADA TO HOST ANNUAL FUNDRAISER AT THE VENETIAN

Spread the Word Nevada, a nonprofit organization that supports children's literacy, has its 11th annual Storybook Gala fundraiser scheduled for Saturday at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South. The event is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with drinks and a silent auction. Dinner, entertainment and a live auction are scheduled for 7 p.m.

MGM ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR TEACHER RECOGNITION PROGRAM

MGM Resorts International is accepting nominations for its Teacher of the Game Recognition Program. All licensed Clark County School District teachers are eligible for nomination, and 17 will be selected to attend a University of Nevada, Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels men's basketball home game this season. Other prizes will also be awarded, including $500 each for their classrooms.

Teachers nominated should demonstrate excellence in the classroom, motivation, creativity and dedication. Nominations are due Oct. 1.

SPARK! POETRY CONTEST OPEN TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

Clark County high school students are invited to enter the Spark! poetry contest sponsored by the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Guidelines are available at vegasvalleybookfestival.org or at the Nevada Arts Council office at 2755 E. Desert Inn Road, Suite 155. The deadline for submission is at 5 p.m. Oct. 5.

Winners will receive cash prizes of $100, $200 and $300. Students will be judged on their original poems and their recitation at the festival on Nov. 3.
