1 dead in 2-car racing crash in southwest Las Vegas

One man is dead after a two-car crash early Monday in what Las Vegas police said looked like a road race gone bad.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified Michael Anthony Aviles, 19, of Las Vegas as the man who died during the crash involving a 1998 Honda CRX and a 1998 Pontiac Firebird that occurred about 2:30 a.m. on Spanish Ridge Avenue, near Russell Road and Durango Drive.

Evidence and witness statements indicate that the Pontiac, driven by Aviles, and the Honda, driven by another 19-year-old man, were eastbound on Spanish Ridge, east of Riley Street, when the Pontiac left the roadway and hit a block wall. The Pontiac then re-entered the road and collided with the Honda.

Aviles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found the Honda unoccupied. They are searching for the driver.

Witnesses told police both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed, possibly racing.

This is Metro’s 69th traffic-related fatality for 2014.
