1 dead in northeast valley crash

One man died late Saturday night after a car crashed into a power post in the northeast valley, according to Las Vegas police.

A 23-year-old male driver was eastbound on Gowan Road, near Walnut Road and approaching New Horizon Avenue, just before 10:30 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and drove into a dirt shoulder. The car headed back on the roadway, drove across the westbound lanes of Gowan and struck a wooden power post on the passenger side, police said. There were two other passengers in the car.

The driver and a 20-year-old passenger, identified by the Clark County coroner’s office as North Las Vegas resident Marcos Luna, were taken to University Medical Center. The driver suffered serious injuries and Luna died at the hospital.

Police said the third passenger, a 20-year-old man, refused medical assistance and was released from the scene.

It is unclear if alcohol or speed was a factor.

This is Metro’s 78th traffic-related fatality for the year. This accident remains under investigation.
