The body of a 33-year-old Las Vegas man who went missing in April after his canoe flipped on a lake in Alaska has been found, according to a department of public safety spokeswoman.
Alaska state troopers discovered a body Tuesday afternoon in Trail Lake near the Trail Lake Lodge and tentatively identified him as Matthew Asturi, spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said.
Asturi was reported missing on April 20 about 100 miles south of Anchorage when witnesses said they saw a canoe flipped over and floating in Trail Lake, state troopers said.
Witnesses said Asturi was not wearing a life jacket and had been drinking alcohol before he went out in a canoe. He was seen paddling about 15 minutes before authorities received their first dispatch call.
Poor conditions at the lake halted the search days later when the lake’s water temperature was 35 degrees with “zero” visibility, authorities said.
