Award recognizes Kelly Elementary School for excellent food service

Students in the Clark County School District come into the lunchroom every day expecting a tasty meal, but few of them know the lengths that food service staff go through to feed all 309,000 of them. The staff at Kelly Elementary School near downtown Las Vegas, stands above the rest, having just received the district’s first Food Service Five Star Award for excellence in the areas of health, safety and attitude.

The sound of a trumpet blaring over the loudspeaker is the first clue that this is not a regular clinic day at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine. This is the Sergeant Clint Ferrin Dental Clinic, which provides care to veterans with no dental coverage.

Sin and evil can grow uncomfortably close to those who are careless

“All evil includes sin, but not all sin is evil.” Would lying fit here? For example: lying is a sin, but lying to save somebody from harm is not evil. “Crime most often includes sin, but not all sin is criminal.” Would consensual sex between two single adults fit here? Their act is a sin because they are not married, but it is not a crime.

There’s Christmas spirit, and then there’s allowing the hoopla of the season to seep into every aspect of life. For the last 25 years, Tom Devoe has comfortably managed somewhere in the middle. The 69-year-old’s white hair and bristly beard are his signature look from March to Dec. 26. Neighbors, grandkids and strangers greet him as “Santa.”
