Literary Las Vegas: Lynn M. Zook, Allen Sandquist & Carey Burke

Lynn M. Zook, a Nevada-raised historian, preservationist and filmmaker, teamed with local photographer and postcard collector Allen Sandquist and Las Vegas memorabilia collector Carey Burke to produce the Postcard History Series book "Las Vegas 1905-1965." The book is packed with postcards ranging from the Old Stewart Ranch to the Desert Inn's Painted Desert Room. Along the way, the authors share the history of the postcard images and the town. While much of the collection is tied to the resort areas, off-the-Strip images - such as an early Sunrise Hospital, Las Vegas High School and Las Vegas Public Library - are included, too.

Readers may have a chance to see some of Burke's collection at his table outside the Casino Chip & Gaming Token Collectors Club international convention scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the South Point, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Admission is $10 Thursday, $5 Friday and free Saturday. Visit ccgtcc.com.

Excerpt from "Las Vegas 1905-1965"

The Stardust was the last hotel to be built on the Las Vegas Strip in the 1950s. Its arrival was also heralded by the older properties' remodeling and renovating. Everybody, it seemed, needed more hotel rooms, more space, and more machines. The Old West theme was almost gone from the landscape as older hotels raced to embrace the space-age theme. The Stardust's owners had bought the shuttered Royal Nevada Hotel and incorporated the building, hotel rooms, and swimming pool into the Stardust.
