Wine event to support Vegas PBS programming
After doing the event 26 previous times, the organizers of Southern Nevada Public Television don't feel they need to reinvent the wheel for the 27th Splendor in the Glass Wine & Beer Tasting event. But that's fine because it keeps rolling along as well as ever.
"This wine tasting event is our signature fundraiser and is a great opportunity to bring our continued supporters together to celebrate the success of Vegas PBS in the community as well as raise critical funds needed to support programming and outreach," said Bill Curran, Southern Nevada Public Television board president.
The annual event that benefits programming and community outreach initiatives for Vegas PBS is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Westgate Las Vegas ballroom, 3000 Paradise Road.
"It's going to be a great event," said Charlotte Hill, chairwoman of the event and a Southern Nevada Public Television board member. "We'll have entertainment by Woody Woods Jazz Combo, a live auction, a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres and, of course, the wine tasting."
A variety of wines and beers from more than 60 wineries and breweries are set to be available for tasting courtesy of Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada.
"Southern Wine and Spirits chooses and provides the wines," said Hill. "They're always a great selection, and we get a lot of positive feedback about them. I'm not a big drinker myself, so I usually drink water, but the people really seem to enjoy the tasting."
The auction items include a two-night stay at the Historic Sutter Home Victorian Inn, complete with a wine country breakfast, tour and tasting at the Napa Winery; four tickets to the Boyd Gaming 300 NASCAR Xfinity race in March; and two tickets to Cirque du Soleil's One Night for One Drop.
"We're also having a cooking demonstration by celebrity chef and restaurant consultant Grant MacPherson," said Hill. "He hasn't told me what he's making at the event yet, but he's an excellent chef, so it should be very entertaining."
MacPherson hasn't told Hill what he's making because he isn't quite sure himself and won't be until the day of the event.
"I'm going to go shopping at the new farmers market in Summerlin that morning and pick up the ingredients," he said. "I'll be making some salads with very fresh greens."
MacPherson moved to Las Vegas in 1998 to be the executive chef at the opening of the Bellagio. He has settled into the valley, and his two young children attend local schools.
"It should be a fun event, and it helps the community," MacPherson said. "I moved here from Singapore, but I'm a Las Vegan now."
