Driver charged after hitting southeast valley bicyclist

A 50-year-old bicyclist was in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in the southeast valley Monday morning, according to Las Vegas police.

Officers responded at 5:41 a.m. to the intersection of Boulder Highway and South Lamb Boulevard where Andrew Diaz was riding a bike north on Boulder Highway, near the east curb, Metro wrote in a release Monday night.

Witness statements and evidence at the scene indicate Diaz was hit by a 1996 Honda Civic that fled without stopping, police wrote in the release.

Diaz was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with critical injuries.

The driver of the Honda, 40-year-old Braulio Encizo-Benitez, was found at his residence a short time later, the release said.

Encizo-Benitez failed a field sobriety test and was arrested on charges of DUI and hit-and-run. He is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.
