Early morning fire leaves dozens homeless

Nearly 40 people are without homes after a fire burned through their apartments early Thursday morning, officials said.

The American Red Cross is assisting the 17 children, two disabled people and 19 adults who were displaced by the blaze at 1405 Vegas Valley Drive, near Maryland Parkway, the Clark County Fire Department wrote in a news release.

The department received the call about 2 a.m. and responded to the two-story building to find large amounts of smoke and flames.

"Crews battled the blaze and remained on scene until 5 a.m.," the release said.

The entire building was evacuated.

Investigators are still working to determine what started the fire and how much damage was caused.
