Excessive heat expected this weekend

It creeps in through the back door, the front window or in through the garage. It waits in the yard, the car and even the house.

Brace yourself, Las Vegas.

The heat is coming.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch for the Mojave Desert Tuesday afternoon. Officials expect the hottest temperatures of the year so far.

The watch is expected to peak in the Valley this weekend, bringing temperatures between 106 and 109 degrees, before dipping back down to 100 degrees Monday.

So, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the city. Temperatures on Mount Charleston are expected to only reach the mid-80s during the day and drop to the mid-50s at night.

However, residents won’t find any relief at Lake Mead, where temperatures might surpass the Valley’s with a high of 113 degrees. Heat causes the most weather-related deaths in the Mojave Desert, according to the weather service. For those tough enough to stick it out, individuals should avoid strenuous work during the hottest part of the day, eat light meals, and wear lightweight clothing. It is also important to drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Pets, children, and the elderly should stay in cool, ventilated areas away from the sun with plenty of water.

Catholic Charities provides a summer day shelter for up to 100 men at a time. Individuals will be provided with showers, toiletries and water. The facility is located at 1151 Las Vegas Blvd. North and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
