Hard freeze warning in effect for Las Vegas until Monday
January 11, 2013 - 6:57 pm
The National Weather Service is issuing a hard freeze warning through Monday as a dry, cold air mass settles in the Las Vegas Valley.
Temperatures are expected to dip into the low 20s and teens with wind gusts up to 18 mph.
The warning urges individuals to cover exposed pipes and pool equipment, run pool filters during the night and early morning, and bring pets and plants indoors to prevent freezing.
Temperatures in Mount Charleston are expected to drop between 3 and 20 degrees. Wind chill values are expected to be as low as 16 below zero.
The Las Vegas Valley, Mesquite, Barstow, Calif., and Kingman, Ariz., are expected to be impacted the greatest by the freeze, according to the weather service.
The cold weather has prompted Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada to offer a winter day shelter program in addition to its nighttime shelter today through Monday.
The shelter, at 1511 Las Vegas Blvd. North, will be open around the clock, except for when it closes for housekeeping. The shelter can take in up to 300 men, ages 18 and older, each day.
