Kickin’ up the dust downtown at Helldorado Days — PHOTOS

It’s time to cowboy up and get in touch with Las Vegas’ Wild West roots.

Helldorado Days, featuring a parade, a rodeo, a carnival and the whiskerino contest, gets rolling Thursday night and lasts through Sunday.

Created in 1934 and produced by the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No. 1468, the 81-year civic event has raised more than $4 million during its history to assist local children’s and veterans’ charities.

To find the rodeo and carnival, head to Symphony Park at 100 S. Grand Central Parkway, near The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The annual downtown Helldorado Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday downtown on Fourth Street, starting at Gass Avenue and ending at Stewart Avenue.

Tickets to Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeos are available online for 7 p.m. May 14-16; tickets for regional rodeo action are available for 5 p.m. May 17. Watch children ages 5-7 mutton busting each night, with mutton busting finals Sunday at 4 p.m.

Local charities The Animal Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada, The Shade Tree and Project 150 will benefit from this year’s ticket sales. The parade and rodeo are sponsored, in part, by the Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial.
