Las Vegas judge nominated for federal sentencing panel

President Barack Obama has nominated a Las Vegas federal judge to serve on the United States Sentencing Commission.

U.S. District Judge Richard Boulware, who has been on the bench since June 2014, must be approved for the six-year term by the U.S. Senate before he can start the job.

The seven-member sentencing commission is an independent agency of the judicial branch that sets sentencing guidelines for the nation's federal courts.

In nominating Boulware for the part-time position, Obama said the former assistant federal public defender has demonstrated an "unwavering commitment to justice."
