Las Vegas Monorail ridership continues to fall
November 9, 2012 - 5:27 pm
Even as its leaders talk about eventual expansion, the ridership on the Las Vegas Monorail continued its years-long slide.
During the third quarter, the 1.07 million people who boarded the automated trains marked a 12.8 percent decline from the same period last year. Due to a higher mix of fares, revenues fell just 4.1 percent to $4.75 million.
For the first nine months of the year, the 3.1 million riders marks an 18.7 percent drop from 2011. Revenues were down 19.1 percent to $14.1 million.
Part of the woes stem from the closure of the Sahara, the end station for the monorail, in May 2011. But this year marks a continuation of the consistently sliding ridership that has plagued the monorail since it opened late in 2004.
