Las Vegas police investigate death of woman after unapproved medical procedure

Las Vegas police said Tuesday they are investigating two men who may have been involved in a woman’s death that resulted from an unapproved medical procedure.

Few details have been released so far because the investigation is ongoing, but a woman died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center on Aug. 12 and police said her death came after an unapproved procedure.

It is unclear what the procedure was and where it was performed.

Homicide detectives are looking for other patients who have been seen by men claiming to be doctors Cody Stoneking and Karl Bachman.

The case was brought to Metro by the coroner’s office, which has one case in its system from Sunrise Hospital on Aug. 12. Kim Chun Ji Wang Liu, 74, died that day, but her cause and manner of death haven’t been determined, pending toxicology reports and the police investigation.

The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners reported Tuesday that no formal complaints had been filed against either of the two men, who do not show up in the medical board’s licensing search.

Sunrise Hospital did not find Liu in its system.

Anyone who has seen or spoken to Stoneking or Bachman is urged to contact Metro’s Homicide Section at 702-828-3521 or homicide@lvmpd.com.
