Man, 86, arrested Thursday after wielding sword at officers near Trump hotel

Metro is still working to identify the man who was arrested Thursday night after wielding a sword at officers just west of the Trump International hotel.

Before the man with the sword showed up, officers were assisting a motorist whose car was stuck on the railroad tracks about 10:45 p.m. on Fashion Show Drive, between Sammy Davis Junior and South Highland drives, Metro Lt. Rick Given said. The car was trying to make a U-turn when its wheels got stuck in the rails.

"Union Pacific was notified and ensured no train traffic until the vehicle could get cleared," Given said.

As officers assisted the motorist, the separate man approached the group wielding a sword. When officers confronted the man, he dropped the sword and officers moved toward him to take him into custody.

But as officers tried to arrest the man, he fought back as he was cuffed. The man was taken to the Clark County Detention Center as a John Doe on charges involving battery on a protected person, Given said. Booking records show the man was 86.

"The officer is OK with a few scrapes," Given said.
