Man arrested in connection with 4-month-old’s December death

A man was arrested in connection with the December death of a 4-month-old boy in the northeast valley, Las Vegas police said Thursday.

Devonta Lewis was booked into Clark County Detention Center on Friday on a child abuse charge, Metro Lt. Laura Meltzer said, citing his arrest report. Pending the outcome of the Clark County coroner's office investigation into the death of Devonta Lewis Jr., Lewis' charges could be amended to murder by child abuse.

On Thursday, the coroner's office had not determined the cause and manner of Devonta Jr.'s death, but according to Clark County Detention Center's inmate logs, Lewis now faces one count each of first-degree murder and child abuse or neglect with substantial bodily harm.

Meltzer said she could not officially confirm the relationship between Lewis and the child, but "it looks like it's the baby's father."

Police said they were notified about 12:30 a.m. Dec. 10 by the fire department to respond to 5150 E. Sahara Ave., near Nellis Boulevard, for a medical call. Officers that morning also responded to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where Devonta Jr. died at 12:34 a.m.

Metro's abuse and neglect detectives are investigating.
