Man hospitalized for smoke inhalation after apartment blaze

A man was hospitalized in serious condition from smoke inhalation Friday night after neighbors carried him out of his burning apartment before firefighters arrived.

The man, about 60 years old and unable to walk, was carried off his burning couch by several neighbors before he was burned, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters responded at 8:01 p.m. Friday to the blaze at Maverick Apartments, 221 S. Bruce St., near Charleston Boulevard. The fire was confined to one unit, causing an estimated $10,000 of damages.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it’s possibly from a combination of smoking and medical oxygen equipment.

No one else at the apartment complex was displaced. The man, who was conscious, was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
