Motorized cart crash sent man down elevator shaft, Caesars says

A mishap on a motorized cart led to a man falling 20 feet down a Caesars Palace elevator shaft Thursday night, according to the the gaming operator.

The man works at the resort delivering food to hotel rooms, Caesars Entertainment Corp. spokesman Gary Thompson said Friday. He was a driving a motorized cart that was pulling a rack of bowls in a kitchen area when the rack got caught in a doorway leading to freight elevators.

When the man turned toward the rack, Thompson said, he somehow hit the gas pedal and drove straight into a pair of elevator doors. The crash pushed the doors open, and the man and the cart fell down the shaft.

The man and the cart landed on top of an elevator, Thompson said. The cart may have pinned the man, but that wasn’t entirely clear.

It happened just after 9 p.m. Thursday, according to the Clark County Fire Department. The Las Vegas Fire Department also responded. It took emergency workers about an hour and 20 minutes to pull the man out.

The man was taken to University Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
