New leads sought in search for cabdriver
A man missing since January had recently gone through a bitter breakup and was last seen by his ex-girlfriend and her husband before he disappeared, the man's family said Thursday.
The family of Keith Goldberg, missing since January, came forward with the new information because they hoped to spur leads in the case. The family members initially withheld the whole story from the media because they wished for a quick resolution to the painful ordeal.
"I don't really want to get into my own suspicions or speculate," said his sister, Jodi Goldberg. "We're just hoping to get all the facts out, and maybe someone will come forward."
Jodi Goldberg, 47, said in December Keith Goldberg broke up with his girlfriend of two years. The woman had left Keith Goldberg for her husband, from whom she had been separated but not divorced, Jodi Goldberg said.
It was unclear whether Keith Goldberg, a 54-year-old cabdriver who moved to Las Vegas four or five years ago, knew his girlfriend was married during their relationship. Las Vegas police have not named anyone as a suspect in his disappearance.
The ex-girlfriend did not return messages on her cellphone or respond to Facebook messages requesting comment. Jodi Goldberg said the woman moved out of the apartment at 2362 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson after the breakup and moved in with her husband. Keith Goldberg moved out late in January and began staying with some fellow cabdrivers, but the apartment was still leased in both their names.
On the morning of Jan. 31, a Tuesday, Keith Goldberg made several stops. The first was to a Dotty's casino near Las Vegas Boulevard South and St. Rose Parkway, where he was captured by surveillance footage. That was the last known photograph of Keith Goldberg.
He got a haircut just after noon. Later, he went back to his old Henderson apartment for reasons Jodi Goldberg doesn't know.
Jodi Goldberg said a private investigator hired by the family interviewed Keith Goldberg's girlfriend, who confirmed that she and her husband saw Keith Goldberg that afternoon. There was apparently an argument, but Jodi Goldberg doesn't know the particulars.
Some of Keith Goldberg's and his ex-girlfriend's belongings remained at the old apartment and there had been a few spats over property in prior weeks.
"She (his ex-girlfriend) said they were arguing over stupid stuff," Jodi Goldberg said.
At 3:52 p.m., someone called the Lucky Cab Co. and called in sick for Keith Goldberg, but it wasn't him. Employees at the company told the Goldbergs that Keith Goldberg's ex-girlfriend made the call and identified herself by her first name.
That was the last call made with Keith Goldberg's cellphone, which hasn't been recovered. He didn't report for work that day or ever again. He wasn't reported missing until Feb. 3, when his brother, Jeffrey Goldberg, arrived in Las Vegas for their annual Super Bowl party and Keith Goldberg was nowhere to be found.
On Feb. 10, police found Keith Goldberg's car parked on the street outside an apartment complex near Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard South.
Last month, the Goldbergs told the Review-Journal they had given up on finding their brother alive.
The family is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of their brother's body, which they suspect was dumped.
"Police are saying this is highly suspicious," Jodi Goldberg said. "They do believe (it's) foul play."
Police confirmed last month that the homicide section has helped with the investigation, but it remains a missing person case. Police have not released updates on the case.
The family will continue to use a Twitter account, @FindKeithG, to provide their own updates and will keep contacting local and national media until their brother is found, they said.
Jodi Goldberg said Keith Goldberg's ex-girlfriend has hired an attorney and has stopped speaking to their family.
Jodi Goldberg said she doesn't know the status of the police investigation or whether an arrest is imminent, but detectives reminded her of one thing: "They said they've got no body and no crime scene."
Anyone with information about Keith Goldberg's disappearance is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department's missing persons detail at 702-828-2907.
