Nominations sought for Tule Springs advisory council

Do you know anyone who might want to shape the future of Nevada’s newest National Monument? The Department of Interior is seeking nominations for four people to serve on the advisory council for Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument.

Council members will advise the Secretary of Interior during preparation and implementation of a management plan for the 22,650-acre monument at the northern edge of the Las Vegas Valley.

The site is considered one of the richest and world’s most wide-ranging collections of ice age bones.

Enabling legislation signed into law in December directs the council to have 10 members appointed by the Secretary of Interior for three-year terms. Six members already have been nominated by the state of Nevada, Clark County, the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, Nellis Air Force Base and the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe. The four remaining positions are to include one person from the conservation community in Southern Nevada; one Clark County resident whose background reflects the purposes for which the monument was established; and two residents of Clark or adjacent counties with experience in paleontology.

Individuals wishing to apply for a member-at-large position should submit a nomination packet to: Christie Vanover, Public Affairs Officer, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, Nevada 89005 or tusk_information@nps.gov.

Packets should include the nominee’s full name, home address, email and phone number along with a resume. They must be postmarked by July 2, 2015.
