Nevada lawmakers launched a new bid Tuesday to block a proposed gravel quarry at Sloan Hills outside Henderson. Similar bills to declare mining off-limits on 800 acres overseen by the Bureau of Land Management stalled and died in last year’s session of Congress.
Army Spc. Brian Tabada of Las Vegas was killed Sunday in Afghanistan after insurgents ambushed his patrol. Tabada, 21, was a fire-support specialist trained in calling in aircraft and artillery to quell attacks on NATO troops, according to the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Ky.
