Pedestrian dead after trying to cross Boulder Highway

A 34-year-old pedestrian died after he tried to cross Boulder Highway inside a crosswalk and was struck by a car Saturday night, according to Henderson police.

John R. Murphy Jr. was trying to cross Boulder Highway at Gibson road when he was hit about 8:30 p.m. Saturday by a two-door passenger car traveling southbound, Henderson spokesman Keith Paul wrote in a release Sunday morning.

Initial investigations indicate Murphy was crossing at an intersection in a crosswalk, but against a steady red signal and “don’t walk” sign when he was hit, Paul wrote.

Murphy died at the scene. The 26-year-old driver of the car was not injured in the crash.

Police do not suspect that alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the wreck, the release said. Boulder Highway was closed for about three hours Saturday night while police investigated.

Henderson police said Murphy was a Las Vegas resident, but the coroner’s officer had Henderson listed as his city of residence.
