Possible burglary attempt led to a vehicle crash, police say

A possible burglary attempt at a southwest valley church late Sunday morning led to a vehicle-into-pole crash and heavy police presence at a nearby home, according to Las Vegas police.

Officers responded just before 11 a.m. to St. Joseph Husband of Mary Catholic Church, at 7260 W. Sahara Ave., near South Tenaya Way, after an employee at the church reported that someone was testing the door handles in a possible burglary attempt, according to Metro spokesman Lt. John Liberty.

The St. Joseph employee gave police a description of the truck they thought might have been connected to the attempt, but the truck left the church parking lot before police arrived.

Officers searched for the vehicle in the area and attempted to stop a truck that matched the church employee’s description.

As soon as police tried to pull the truck over, the driver sped into a pole near Sahara and Cimarron Road and then fled on foot, Liberty said. There was no chase and no injuries were reported in the crash, he said.

Police also responded to a “problem house” in the 8200 block of West Sierra Cascade Court, where police have had issues in the past, Liberty said. Officers announced themselves with a bull horn and three people, one of whom was believed to be the driver of the truck, came out of the house peacefully.

It was unclear if any arrests were made, Liberty said Sunday afternoon.

Cimarron Road, near Sahara, was closed for about an hour while the wreck was removed, Liberty said.
