Red Rock Campground to close during summer heat

The campground at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area will close for the summer after Memorial Day. But there are plenty of other places near Las Vegas to set up your tent.

The Red Rock Campground, the only developed one in the conservation area, will be closed from May 26 through Sept. 4, the Bureau of Land Management announced Friday. It will reopen Sept. 5, the Saturday before Labor Day.

The campground is about two miles east of the visitor center on State Route 159, West Charleston Boulevard. The boiling Nevada summer is a “low-usage period” at the campground, the BLM said, and the closure happens annually.

Visitors can still do back-country camping at Red Rock Canyon with a permit, BLM spokeswoman Kirsten Cannon said in a news release.

There are eight other nearby campgrounds, including ones in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Valley of Fire State Park and Mojave National Preserve.

And people can camp for free for up to two weeks on BLM public land outside the Las Vegas Valley.
