School bus crashes in south central Las Vegas Valley with 45 students on board

A school bus carrying 45 elementary school students was involved in a crash in the southern valley Thursday morning.

The crash involved one other vehicle and happened about 8:50 a.m. near Bermuda Road and Cactus Avenue, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The bus was headed to Schorr Elementary School, about a mile from the scene of the crash, Clark County School District spokesman David Roddy said.

Six students complained of possible injuries, and a medical crew was called to the scene. All six students were treated at the scene and cleared to go to school, Roddy said.

One grandmother waiting near the scene told a different story. Sandy, who asked that her last name be withheld for privacy reasons, said her granddaughter was taken to a hospital after she complained of neck pain.

“She was still crying when we got here,” the grandmother said.

Her grandson also was on the bus, and he said a car cut in front of the bus, which could not stop in time. The family was not notified by the school district about the crash, but an older student on the bus had a cellphone and called a parent, who notified other parents.

Sandy said the family thought about taking the girl to the hospital but decided to send her in an ambulance out of caution.

Replacement buses were called to the scene to take students to school, and Schorr Elementary officials will be notifying parents of the incident, the district said.
