Triple-digit temperatures return to valley

The mercury soared in the valley on Monday when temperatures hit the triple digits for the first time in 2013.

Monday’s high temperature of 102 degrees fell just short of the 103-degree record for May 13, which was set in 1996.

The air conditioning went out at Rundle Elementary School on Monday, prompting the school near Stewart Avenue and Christy Lane to send students home early.

The week will cool down slightly with a predicted high of just 97 degrees on Wednesday, and possibly dipping back into the mid-80s on Friday.

“There is a gradual cooling trend by the end of the week,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Metzger. Sunday’s high was 98 degrees.

Though the heat isn’t setting any records, it is warmer than the average high temperature of 88 degrees for this time of year.

Residents of the Las Vegas Valley are cautioned to stay hydrated and to be aware of heat safety, especially when it comes to children, pets and hot cars.
