Tweet-a-thon gives virtual glimpse into global policing

Las Vegas police are hopping on the social media bandwagon Friday and joining the next Global Police Tweet-a-thon.

The Tweet-Along, referred to as a virtual ride-along, will begin at 2 p.m. and end at approximately 10 p.m., Metro said in a release Thursday.

Social media staff from the police public information office will ride along with an officer from the northeast command station and tweet calls as they happen.

Metro’s Twitter followers are encouraged to submit questions as they follow along.

Hundreds of law enforcement agencies around the globe will take to Twitter to tweet about various police functions. The overall purpose of the event is to call attention to policing as well as police use of social media.

Millions of people will be reached with thousands of tweets in over 20 different languages, Metro said.

The tweet-a-thon has already begun in Australia.

To join in, follow the hashtag #poltwt. You can also find Metro on Twitter at @LVMPD.
