Two die when speeding car crashes into vehicle near UNLV
A man and a woman were killed when their car was struck by a speeding car that ran a red light near UNLV on Sunday morning, Las Vegas police said.
Their identities were not released, but police said they were a 69-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, both of Las Vegas.
Police said a 2006 Ford Fusion was going west on Harmon at a high rate of speed in the eastbound lanes and failed to stop at the red light at Maryland Parkway. The Fusion hit a 1996 Dodge Stratus that was traveling north on Maryland at Harmon and going through the intersection on a green light.
Police said the front of the Fusion struck the right side of the Stratus, pushing both vehicles across the intersection and onto University of Nevada, Las Vegas property. The driver of the Fusion, 28-year-old Jonathan Syverson, was transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with moderate to serious injuries.
The driver and passenger of the Stratus were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Police Department's Fatal Detail is investigating.
The collision marked the 58th and 59th traffic fatalities under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police.
